- IoT devices
- have given us many useful gadgets – webcams, printers, display terminals, point-of-sale systems. But IoT devices “phone home”. They transmit data and have the ability to manipulate your router, disable security features and open up access from outside – without you ever noticing that you're unprotected.
- Router and antivirus
- no longer cover this by a long shot. Antivirus software runs on PCs, but not on all your IoT devices. Think of your router as a doorman who politely opens the door for anyone who wants to come in or go out – when not everyone should be allowed into the building at all.
- Firewalls
- are technical devices that secure internet access. Instead of a doorman, they give you a trained security guard who checks against fixed rules who's allowed in. When this service is looked after externally, it's called Managed Firewall.
Common misconception: A router is not a firewall. Routers connect networks and at best provide rudimentary security functions – that's nowhere near comparable to a proper firewall.
